Established in 1997, the NGO Bunker produces and presents cultural events – from contemporary theatre and dance performances to workshops and other educational programmes. It also carries out research methods in the field of culture, produces one of the most noted international festivals, the Mladi levi Festival, and runs the Ljubljana venue, Old Power Station.

Bunker aims to refresh and invigorate the Slovenian cultural space, encourage the mobility of artists and their works both in Slovenia and abroad and promote the intertwining of different art disciplines. It also actively collaborates with numerous artists, theatres, festivals and networks throughout Europe. Through its artistic programmes and events, Bunker stimulates discussion on contemporary artistic practices and topics.

In 2004, Bunker began managing the Old Power Station in Ljubljana after winning the public tender initiated by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia. The programme at this site of cultural heritage consists of Bunker's productions as well as theatre and dance productions, festivals, concerts and various interdisciplinary events produced by other organisations.

Production

In its productions, Bunker focuses on works that employ innovative approaches, intertwine different art disciplines and offer reflections on relevant cultural, political and social issues. Besides producing works by other performing arts makers, Bunker has recently been involved in producing research-based works that respond to global issues such as migrations and ecological awareness, collaborating with international artists.

Festivals

Since 1998, Bunker has been organising the annual international festival of theatre and dance Mladi levi (Young Lions). Taking place at the end of August, the festival showcases groups and artists with distinctive and original ideas and disciplines from all over the world.

In 2002, Bunker co-organised the first Drugajanje Festival with the Second Grammar School in Maribor. The festival aims to affirm contemporary dance and theatre art among youth audiences through performances, workshops and lectures.

Educational activities

Bunker has been running the cultural education pilot project Theatre Playground, which seeks to bring contemporary theatre to schools all over Slovenia and engage participating pupils and students to be not only consumers of art but also creative producers. Within their educational activities, Bunker develops new cultural education formats, including Schools in Culture (for pupils and teachers), A Resident Artist, Tandem Classes and the Young Curators Club.
